There is an opinion that a nation should attempt to be completely self-sufficient in food production and minimise its reliance on imports. I disagree with this view, as food imports bring considerable benefits that cannot be easily replaced by domestic production alone.

One major reason why food imports are necessary is that they significantly improve people’s quality of life. As societies develop, consumers tend to expect greater variety in their daily diets. Relying solely on local food production would inevitably limit what people can eat, especially in regions with unfavourable climates or limited agricultural resources. Through importing food, consumers are able to enjoy a wide range of products from different parts of the world, regardless of season or location. This diversity plays an important role in maintaining a balanced and enjoyable diet.

In addition, international food trade contributes to economic growth on both national and global levels. Exporting agricultural products allows producing regions to earn foreign income, create employment opportunities and stimulate related industries such as transportation and packaging. Governments also benefit from increased tax revenues, which can then be used to support public services. From this perspective, food imports and exports form an essential part of a healthy modern economy rather than an unnecessary dependence.

It is true that importing food involves certain disadvantages. Long-distance transportation may lead to higher energy consumption, and some imported food products are sold at relatively high prices. Nevertheless, these issues should be viewed in context. Consumers are not forced to purchase imported food and can still choose locally produced alternatives. As long as domestic food supplies remain stable, imports simply expand the range of options available in the market.

In conclusion, while local food production is undoubtedly important, attempting to minimise food imports is neither practical nor beneficial. Given the advantages in terms of dietary diversity and economic development, food imports should be regarded as a positive feature of today’s interconnected world.
