Opinion

(Original Question)

Some people believe that young offenders should receive the same punishment as adults.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

这是一道典型的 Opinion(观点类)作文

  • young offenders
  • same punishment
  • adults

(Band 7–8)

It is often argued that young offenders should receive the same punishment as adults. I disagree with this view, as juveniles differ significantly from adults in terms of psychological development and should be treated accordingly.

Firstly, young people are not fully mature and often lack the ability to make well-informed decisions. Their behavior is more easily influenced by their surroundings, including family, peers and social environment. As a result, they may not fully understand the consequences of their actions, which makes it unfair to impose the same level of punishment as that given to adults.

Secondly, juveniles have a greater potential for rehabilitation. With proper guidance, education and support, many young offenders can change their behavior and become responsible members of society. Instead of focusing solely on punishment, it is more effective to provide opportunities for reform and personal development.

Admittedly, some people argue that severe punishment can act as a deterrent. While this may be true in certain cases, particularly for serious crimes, it does not justify treating all young offenders in the same way as adults.

In conclusion, although punishment is necessary, young offenders should not be treated the same as adults. A more balanced approach that emphasizes rehabilitation is more appropriate.
