It is often debated whether universities should primarily prepare students for employment or focus on personal development. This essay will address both questions in turn.
In my opinion, the primary function of universities is to supply society with qualified and capable professionals. Higher education institutions play a crucial role in training doctors, engineers, teachers and other specialists who contribute directly to economic and social progress. Without universities, modern societies would struggle to maintain professional standards and innovation.
Regarding whether higher education should be more career-oriented, I believe that in today’s competitive job market, universities need to place greater emphasis on employability. Students invest significant time and money in their education, and it is reasonable for them to expect improved job prospects. Therefore, universities should incorporate internships, industry partnerships and practical training into their curricula. Nevertheless, academic knowledge should not be neglected, as it provides the theoretical foundation necessary for long-term professional growth.
In conclusion, universities mainly function as institutions that prepare skilled individuals for societal needs. While career orientation should receive increased attention, it must be supported by solid academic training to ensure sustainable development.
